Moby Dick

Over this past summer, our Honors Enlgish assignment was to read Moby Dick. If you don't know this book, it's 552 pages about a crazy sea captain and his crew who go on an adventure to find the most powerful whale in the ocean. But intertwined with the story are pages and pages of mind-numbing details about whaling history and techniques. For this reason, it has become a somewhat dreaded novel. And I have to agree. It was definitely a difficult read. But just after I finished it, my sister sent me this link. This man decided to draw an illustration for every page of Moby Dick. That's 552 illustrations! I love the idea of turning such a arduous book into a beautiful work of art. Here is the link and some of my favorite illustrations:

WOAAAA

So our latest Work of Art Project was due last week. It was definitely an open-ended prompt. Unfortunately I procrastinated a LITTLE too much. Looking back, I really like the idea I came up with, but it was not executed very well-- definitely not one of my best pieces. But I thought I would put it up here anyways. The prompt was simply "to use text and numbers". Since I rarely use either in my art, I chose to really emphasize them. I picked a quote that I love (yay Beatles!!) and this is what I came up with....

Harry Potter Midnight Premiere!

Guess what's happening this Friday morning! That's right! The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part 1) midnight premiere! Woohoo! I can't even express how excited I am. I have grown up with the HP books and movies. I honestly wish that I could attend Hogwarts, even if it meant risking my life fighting against basilisks, dementors, deatheaters, Professor Umbridge, or yes, even Voldemort. So this Thursday night, I will be anxiously awaiting the 12:05 Friday showing in a crowd outside of Bridgeport. I'll send you off with this illuminating quote: "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities"-Albus Dumbledore (the greatest wizard of all time).

Open Studio

Last Friday was the last day of the Quarter. We didn't have school because it was a teacher grading day. However, I ended up spending a good seven hours in the art room. From 9AM to almost 5PM, with a brief lunch break somewhere in the middle. I finally finished my self-portrait (just in time for the grading period). It was so satisfying! I will post pictures soon!

Is there a post due Monday?

So I can't remember whether or not there's a post due on Monday, so I'm going to write one just in case...
Last Thursday, we turned in our WOA #3 (the hats). I made a pill-box hat out of this cool, patterened felt used a flower and feathers to decorate it. It's a little hard to describe I guess (hence the pictures). We brought two of the administration in to judge and they picked my hat as the winner! I won a 3.5 lb bag of candy! Woohoo! But, as much as I enjoyed winning, I don't think I would have picked my hat to win. There were some AWESOME hats. Overall, I'm super impressed by all these work of art challenges!

WOA #3

For our third Work of Art Project, we're supposed to make a HAT! That's craaaazy. I feel like a project runway designer. Now I just need Tim Gunn to help sassily critique my ideas. LOVE THAT MAN.
But back to art class, I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone decides to do with this challenge. It could go a lot of different ways. I can't wait until Thursday! But here are some awesome hats to check out in the mean time:

AP Fieldtrip Photos

Well, we went on our AP Art photography fieldtrip last week and it was FANTASTIC! I had so much fun! My favorite part was probably the OHSU tram, but I also loved Luscher Farm, Oaks Park, Union Train Station and Pioneer Courthouse Square. Over the course of the day, I took close to 500 photos!! Only nine or ten of which were any good :) Here are a few of my favorites...

Luscher Farm- The light was perfect at 8AM!

Luscher Farm- I loved this old wooden birdhouse

Luscher Farm- Pattern? Rhythm? I'm still not sure

Oaks Park- I just love the colors in this one!

Oaks Park- An over-used idea but I still like it :)

OHSU- Can't go wrong with reflective windows

OHSU- I liked the shapes and the industrial feel

Union Station- Cool perspective? And great rust!

Union Station- Fantastic color scheme. Awesome/Sketch plants?

First Presbytarian Church- Organ pipes are stunning

Yay! We have and AP Art fieldtrip this Wednesday! We're going to P-Town to take photos for the breadth section of our portfolio. I'm super excited because I LOVE photography! I think it can capture something that other forms of art just can't. Here are some Scholastic Art Award winning photos for you to check out:

Work of Art Challenges

Even though we just finished the first one, I already love the work of art challenges! They feel more inspiring than doing a sketchbook each week because the different mediums and prompts really stretch our limits. I was so impressed by everyone's book projects! And I'm really looking forward to seeing the family portraits in two weeks. I'm already coming up with ideas for mine! Hopefully we can get a teacher to come and be a judge next time. That would make it even more interesting!

New (School) Year's Resolution

It's the start of a new school year and I've decided to make a resolution: NO PROCRASTINATING. I know I say that every year, but this year, it's actually going to happen. I'm saying goodbye to late night cram sessions and doing homework at break, minutes before class. Everyone says how important it is to get your work done in early in AP Art so this year is going to be different. Organization, time management? Yes, please!
